Giraffe Update

Here is an update on the destruction of the BJU "giraffe." I had a friend capture the frame from the Web cam that is trained on the front entrance at BJU. It is a moment in history! There are already people asking for small pieces of the pylon.

The Greenville News and WYFF interviewed Dr. Bob Jones III. I thought he had some neat things to say. WYFF will probably be limited to a few seconds of the interview, but The Greenville News captured the interview on video and will be putting it up on greenvilleonline.com.

A little bit of history came down today. I guess the "giraffe" has been existence since the mid-1960s or so. It greeted me when I arrived as a freshman forty years ago this fall. I seem to remember the original circle drive that preceded the "giraffe." I visited BJU with my mom during the summer of 1958, and I can still remember what the campus looked like on a beautiful moonlit night.

As I think back over the forty years that I have had a connection with BJU, the renovation of the campus has been pretty amazing. Just one little anecdote: I will never forget the day that the wrecking ball took down the studios of WMUU in the spring of 1971. The radio station was located just about where the old amphitorium fountain was located. The sight that I will never forget was Jim Ryerson, who was the station manager in those days. He had tears in his eyes as the WMUU studios crumbled into rubble.

But as we know, progress changes lots of things over the years.
